The
Annual Report of the Indian Intellectual Property Office (IPIndia) 2024–25
highlights a significant rise in trademark filings, reflecting the growing
importance businesses place on protecting their brands. Trademark applications
increased from approximately 4.76 lakh in 2023–24 to 5.52 lakh in 2024–25,
while filings by foreign applicants also recorded a slight increase, indicating
continued confidence in the Indian market.
Among
the states, Maharashtra led with 98 K applications, followed by Delhi (66 K)
and Gujarat (61 K). Notably, Class 5 (pharmaceuticals and healthcare products)
accounted for the highest share of trademark registrations at 12.80%, followed
by Class 35 (business and retail services) at 10.94%.
The highest number of trademark
registrations under Class 5 highlights the rapid growth of India's
pharmaceutical and healthcare sector. It reflects the increasing emphasis of
pharmaceutical companies on protecting their brands and strengthening their
market presence. The surge in Class 5 filings also suggests that more
pharmaceutical businesses are entering the market, making the sector one of the
fastest-growing and most commercially profitable industries in India, where
brand protection has become a business necessity.
