The Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM) INDIA has introduced a mandatory e-KYC verification process, with implementation commencing in July 2026, for all registered Patent and Trademark Attorneys/Agents. Completion of the e-KYC process is essential to continue accessing the IP India online portal. The verification requires submission of the practitioner's name, office and residential address, photograph, educational qualification documents, and Aadhaar-based biometric authentication through OTP.
Enhancing Security and Global Compliance
The
initiative aims to prevent impersonation, unauthorized use of professional
credentials, and fraudulent IP filings by ensuring that only verified
practitioners can represent clients. It also creates a secure digital audit
trail and strengthens the integrity of India's IP filing system. Similar
identity verification measures have already been adopted by the USPTO in the United States and the EUIPO in Europe to combat intellectual
property fraud and improve cybersecurity.
